Greensburg, PA (August 17 2021) – ATS, a technology partner of the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games, is working with the 2022 USA Games to launch a new mobile app experience for the event scheduled for June 5-12 2022 In Orlando, Florida. The app is a game changer for the movement. It is custom built using the latest technologies and will integrate with 3rd parties to deliver an athlete and fan experience like no other directly to a smart device.

The initial release of the mobile app includes schedules, trip planning information, venue times and distances.  Maps for easily navigating the USA Games venues and several links including shop for merchandise and donating to the Games.  Future releases will include more advanced wayfinding mapping features, notifications, ticketing, results, transportation routes/maps, and a Healthy Athlete experience to promote the #InclusiveHealth initiative and more.

What sets the USA Games apart from other mobile apps is the design of its architecture.  First and foremost, the app has a “digital bridge” that allows it to integrate with other systems of record.  To the athletes, volunteers, families, and fans the data is integrated into the immersive mobile app experience behind the scenes.  It also allows it to expand the audience to those fans who might not necessarily be in attendance at the Games in Orlando but want to follow the progress of an athlete or send them a “virtual cheer” to show their support.  This “digital bridge” is a legacy that will transform the digital experiences in a way that will help programs perform the important work of the Special Olympics Movement.

“It’s truly an honor to be selected by USA Games to develop the mobile app for the 2022 Games,” said Mike Suman, ATS Chief Operations Officer. “We’ve supported the Special Olympics movement for many years, but to be able to support the organization like this is an incredible honor. Our technical teams bring passion to their jobs every day; but, knowing the legacy this app leaves behind fires them up even more!”

Lonnie Snyder, Chief Information Officer for the 2022 USA Games, mentioned “the design of this native mobile app is changing the way the organization approaches not only the 2022 USA Games, but also all of the other Special Olympics events and initiatives worldwide. This project empowers athletes, and gives those who haven’t had a voice, a voice. This has never been possible before. Athletes felt empowered [to be a part of this project] and liked being a part of the solution.”

This product raises the bar for future events beyond the games, according to Snyder. It will create one source of truth for athletes, families, coaches, and volunteers to find the information they need to make their experience at the games the best it can be.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities – giving them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other athletes, and the community. The USA Games is held once every four years in the United States, offering athletes from across the nation and, for the first time, the Caribbean to compete in summer sports.
